-edged red enamel Greek (Geneva) cross on integral crown suspension; the face with a centrally imposed bronze plaque bearing the arms of Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte of Luxembourg; the reverse with a similar plaque with the head of the Grand Duchess facing left and inscribed ‘S.A.R. JOSEPHINE CHARLOTTE GRANDE-DUCHESSE DE LUXEMBOURG, on original ribbon. The Luxembourg Red Cross was founded on the initiative of Grand Duchess Marie-Adélaïde and the instigation of Emile and Aline Mayrisch in August 1914 on the eve of World War I. The involvement of successive Grand Duchesses continued when Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte served as President of the Youth Red Cross from 1959 to 1970 and as President of the Red Cross of Luxembourg from 1964 until her death in 2005. A very fine example of a rare award.
