Description
Military Theodolite / Gun Director by Huet of Paris. No. MG 51 / 858. Artillerie Milliemes. This is a small but well made instrument which appears to be in good working order. It is made out of brass. It has been stripped of its original green paint. The optics are very clean and bright, the scales clear and almost like new. The telescope gives a clear, erect image and magnifies about 5X. It works in a similar way to a transit theodolite, the telescope can rotate horizontally through 360 degrees, but here the units are milliemes. (6400 milliemes = 360 degrees.) The vertical angles are again measured in milliemes, from minus 500 to plus 1100 on either side. Three separate focusing eyepieces are there, not sure how ro use.. The telescope has a cross hair graticule with range scales and other marks. A fourth eyepiece is used to view the built in compass, which has its own locking mechanism, not sure how or if works. There is a bubble level in good condition. The base has 3 levelling screws and a thread for mounting on a tripod. (Not supplied.) Two linked knobs control the elevation of the telescope. Another two linked knobs alter the horizontal scale setting. A third knob moves the telescope relative to the horizontal scale. Apart from the missing paint, not sure of any other issues as i sm not well versed in these. Seems in good condition but seeking as is.
