    BRAID A HAND-MADE RUG
Grandma used to spend years in loving labor
over hand-made floor coverings. Pretty Port-
lander adapts new shortcuts, and now any
amateur can do the same job in record time.
    By WALLY HUNTER
(Reprinted with permission from the Sunday Oregonian, Portland, Oregon.)
If a moving van were to pull up in front of your home to-
morrow morning and dump off a ton of wool scraps would you
be able to take that bulk and turn it into a full-time business?
Probably not, but Fern Carter of Portland did.
One ton of wool, an instinctive sense of color, a good bit of
determination and, of course, plenty of hard work were all she
had in the beginning. But she parlayed those largely intan-
gible assets into a truly unique business, and it is shared with
    hundreds of Northwest people.
Miss Carter's business is braiding and teaching others to
braid the colorful rugs that were once a fixture in early Ameri-
can homes and are now the delight of modern day decorators.
A braided rug is ideal for any young couple flitting nomad-
style from one apartment to another. They can change their
rug size by simply braiding additional rounds or cutting out
portions as desired. Do you like a change in color with the
seasons? It's easy to remove the center or any portion of your
rug by cutting one row of lacing, lifting out and replacing with
a section of a different hue. No longer are cigaret burns or
    moth damage a problem.
Possibly you are a loud exponent of modern design. If so,
don't try to tell Miss Carter that braided rugs won't go with
your prize Dali or Chinese modern. She has a habit of accept-
ing such statements as a challenge-usually with surprising
results. One haughty disbeliever drove Fern to braid an exquisite
Chinese modern rug which she believes is the first ever designed.

Adjustable BRAID-AID" Vari-Folder Does ALL the Folding
    for You -
Nearly All Weights of Material -
    from 1" to 24"
    All Widths
You can quickly and easily set your new BRAID-AID® Varia
Folder to take various widths and weights of material. Simply
re-set the GUIDES to the proper marks when you use a nar-
rower or a wider piece, and re-set the ADJUSTABLE
    FOLDER.
The tempered, nickel-plated steel from which your Vari-Folder
is made has, after experiments with various metals and plas-
tic, proved most satisfactory for your braiding convenience.
With ordinary use your Vari-Folder should last a long time,
but should you need replacement parts they can be ordered
from your local braiding supplier, or directly from Braid-Aid
Company, Kingston, Mass. Should any of the movable parts on
your Vari-Folder accidentally come off they can easily be put
    back on.

    1. FRAME – This is the outside part of your newVari-Folder.
    2. FACE PLATE -The front of your Vari-Folder.
    3. ENTRY-SLOT – The space between the FACE PLATE
and the bottom edge of the FRAME. It is through this space
you feed the strip of material to be folded.
    4. DIAL- The little marks on the FACE PLATE along the
inside edge of the ENTRY SLOT. These are settings for
the GUIDES (5) to allow various widths of materials to
stay centered while passing through the Vari-Folder.
    5. GUIDES -The looped bands on either side of the center
hole in the FACE PLATE. These are easily slid around to
proper setting for various widths of material.

    6. FIXED CONTROL- This is the inside piece you see when
you look into the back of your Folder. It pre-forms material
    for folding.
    7. ADJUSTĀBLE FOLDER– This is the last part of your
Vari-Folder. It can be mbved up or down between the edges
of the frame to allow for various thịcknesses of material,
and to provide proper tension for "easy folding.

About the DIAL and the GUIDES
By looking at the diagram at left
you can see that the marks on the
DIAL are arranged in pairs. That
is, for each mark on the left side
of the Dial as it faces you, there
is a corresponding mark on the
    2
    24
    right side of the Dial.
Widths marked by these pairs (or
sets) of marks are .shown on the
    diagram in half-inches. With the
GUĪDES set on the marks on your
    those
shown as 1-L and 1-R, it will take
material 1" wide. If ĠUIDES are
set on those corresponding to 12-L and 12-R, the Folder will
    Folder corresponding
    to
take material in strips 1½" wide, and so on.
GUIDES are set simply by sliding them around until the
proper mark appears just below the bottom edge of the
GUÍDE. They should be re-set every time you change the
width of your material because they keep the strip centered as
    it passes through the Folder!
    USING YOUR BRAID-AID® VARI-FOLDER
    1. Set GUIDES to width of strip of material you are using.
    2. Pull up ADJUSTABLE FOLDER at back of Vari-Folder.
    3. Push the end of the strip of material into the ENTRY
SLOT and using fingertip or lacer slide material through
    Vari-Folder.
    4. Turn toward center both edges of the strip projecting
through the Vari-Folder, then put folded edges together to
form four thicknesses of material (your braiding STRAND).
    See illustration on front cover.
    5. Now, push down ADJUSTABLE FOLDER to proper ten-
sion to keep material folding as it passes through Vari-
    Folder.
NOTE: Proper tension is reached when the AD-
JUSTABLE FOLDER is set so that material
folds well and moves easily through the Vari-
    Folder as you braid.
    6. Thread the other two Vari-Folders as you did the first one.
Sew open edges of first strand together, keeping stitches
hidden. Now, add second strand and sew edges the same
way, and at the same time sew both strands together side-
by-side. Repeat process with third strand. (NOTE: As this
is the start of your rug all stitches should be hidden and the
three strands sewed together neatly and firmly.)
NOW YOU ARE READY TO BRAID!
For proper use of Vari-Folders always keep them just BELOW
your fingers as you braid (do NOT try to hold them in your
    hands!)
    ----------- 7 -----------
    BRAIDING HINTS
Good rugs depend on firm braiding! Your BRAID-AID® Vari-
Folder does all the folding, but uniformly sized braids are up
to you! To make such braids, simply pull each folded strand
up hard against the braided section after you cross it over.
When using extra-thick material (Blanket Material, Chin-
chilla, etc.) in strips over 2" wide, sew the seam after you
thread the material through the Vari-Folder! That is, as you
reach the end of each strip, remove the Vari-Folder and thread
the new strip through, then stitch the new seam straight across!
If extremely thin material is used you can move the FACE
PLATE down to narrow the ENTRY SLOT, and thus keep
the strip from twisting as it passes through the Vari-Folder.
    FABRIC WIDTHS FOR EASIEST BRAIDING
For best results try various widths of material through the
Vari-Folder. Light Weight materials generally fold best from
1" to 2" wide; Medium Weights from 1¾" to 2½" wide; Heavy
Weights from 14" to 2%" wide.
All of the following materials and many more can be folded
into braiding strands with your BRAÍD-AID® Adjustable
    Vari-Folder:
Heavy Materials: Fleecy woolens, light and medium over-
coatings, light wool and cotton blanketing, wool broadcloth,
corduroy, snowcloth, cheviots and other woolens, twills, etc.
Medium Materials: Light woolens, denim, corduroy, crash,
frieze, tweeds, velvet, velveteen, wool mixtures, light felts, etc.
Light Materials: Suitings (worsteds, gabardines, flannels,
    etc.), linens, huckabuck, cretonnes, etc.
Don't throw away any material without first
trying it in various strip sizes through your
    Vari-Folder!
NOTE: The side slots on your BRAID-AID® Adjustable Vari-
Folder are to take the REEL-AID – a handy attachment that
holds rolled strips up to 15 feet long and keeps them from
    tangling as you braid.
